This 1897 novel is framed as a collection of tales told by “Ambrose, the Fransiscan,” a medieval monk.  The titular Count Antonio is a nobleman forced into outlawry when his love for the ward of Duke Valentine is spurned.  “The charm of the book lies in the simplicity and gravity of the narrator's manner,” wrote the New York Times.
