Former professional boxer, Tadao Ando, though self-taught, is acknowledged as one of the most important Japanese architects and one of the greatest representatives of the minimalist current in contemporary architecture -  the only architect ever to have won the discipline's four most prestigious prizes: the Pritzker, Carlsberg, Praemium Imperiale, and Kyoto Prize.
